Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and Ph.D. at RWTH Aachen University with a thesis on traction in rolling contacts, finished in 1983. From 1984 until 1996 application engineer and project leader in research and product development at SKF GmbH in Schweinfurt, Germany, SKF Engineering and Research Center in Nieuwegein, The Netherlands and CR Industries in Elgin, Ill., USA.  Main focus: rolling element bearings and seals basic tribology, development and application. Since 1996: Professor and director of the Institute of Machine Design and Tribology at Leibniz University Hannover, Germany, with tribology, lubrication, rolling element bearings, seals, wind power drive trains as well as synchronisers, continuously variable transmissions and electrified drive trains for vehicles being major research topics.
